The piece i s based on a main theme, which is introduced right at the beginning in the
low brass section and subsequently undergoes many mutations o f all kinds
(lengthening, shortening, interval changes, etc.), paired with a varied and colorful
orchestration. EVOLUTIONS FOR WINDS begins in a calm, almost "misterioso"
atmosphere, followed b y a long build-up, both in terms o f orchestration and tempo,
until the maximum tempo (quarter note = 126) is reached at "J".
Afterwards, the music calms down, and a short flute solo leads at "N" into a new,
expressive theme, which i s gradually taken u p b y the entire orchestra.
This is followed b y a development section with many elements from the first part of the
composition, albeit i n constantly changing form and instrumentation.
After a tutti repetition of the solemn second theme, a short, lively, and sparkling coda
concludes the composition.
